A Recommendation for SMART as Hell

Posted by on August 1st, 2011 with 0 Comments

I really enjoy sharing the concepts behind SMART as Hell. Audiences are starved for a clear, no-nonsense approach to SMART goals.

It’s clear that 40 years worth of SMART goal training has produced nothing but confusion and a false sense of security in managers, students, and the general public.

When I first started sharing my findings, I was worried that I would be dismissed for debating a concept as common and fundamental as SMART goals. And… there has been a bit of that…

Mostly, however, I’ve seen heads nodding and pens writing as we’ve discussed what’s wrong with most goals and what can be done to make them right. It’s rewarding to have audience members approach me and say, “This helps. I’m a lot clearer about what I’m working on” or “Now I know why that project I’m working on is sinking in a pool of quicksand”.

In May, my colleague Daren Blonski and I presented some of the SMART as Hell findings at the Mt. Diablo ASTD Chapter (which, by the way, is a fantastic group that holds their meetings in a beautiful venue. I highly recommend attending their events), in a presentation titled, “Why are your employees learning goals failing year after year?”. In the talk, we shared learning objectives from 20 of the most popular workshops in the world. These are world-class workshops with great content and passionate facilitators.

But – and it’s a big but – the learning objectives are awful. As a result, the outcomes are inconsistent. No one knows what to expect going into the workshop. No one knows what to expect coming out of the workshop. It’s a terrible state of affairs for students and a frightening message to send to an audience of learning professionals.

To their credit, the message was received positively. I have had a number of audience members contact me directly for follow-up conversations, which is the greatest pay I can receive. Then, over the weekend, Daren and I received certificates of appreciation and a fantastic letter of recommendation. It was an unexpected and appreciated gesture that gives us more energy for the ongoing battle to make the world SMART as Hell!
