If Goals Are the Answer, What is the Question?

Posted by on December 31st, 2012 with 0 Comments

Goals don’t exist in a vacuum. They are typically created to address a question – or a bunch of questions – ranging from “What do you want to do this weekend” to “What am I going to be when I grow up?”

Here are some the questions that might create the need for a goal:

  1. Where are we going?
  2. What are the expectations?
  3. What’s important (most important)?
  4. What’s not important or least important?
  5. How am I doing?
  6. How will I get there?
  7. What other ways are there?
  8. How do I make this task more engaging?
  9. What am I responsible for?
  10. How can I feel good about what I’ve done? Should I?
  11. Who do I reward
  12. How do I compare? Am I winning? How do I beat Joe?
  13. How do I increase productivity?
  14. How do I create momentum? Are we almost there?
  15. How do I decrease variability?
  16. How do I know when I’m done? Are we there yet?

With no goals, I wander – which is appropriate when it’s appropriate. With a goal to climb the mountain, however, I create questions that help me find a way.

What’s your mountain? What are your questions for the coming year? And what goals can create the solutions?
