We Are Evaluation Machines

Posted by on January 31st, 2013 with 0 Comments

When we’re not asking to be evaluated, we’re evaluating others. Constantly.

You don’t believe me? Think about your first two waking hours today.

Here’s a list of some of the evaluations I made on a typical morning:

  1. How do I feel?
  2. How’s the weather outside?
  3. Is the shower water hot enough for me to get in yet? Is it too hot?
  4. Do I have time to check email?
  5. Do I need a coat?
  6. Should I put up the top on my car?
  7. Do I need the heater on?
  8. Should I wear my sunglasses?
  9. How’s traffic?
  10. Should I go for that yellow light?
  11. That driver sucks!
  12. Do I have enough gas?
  13. Should I take First Street or Zanker Road?
  14. Do I have time to pass this truck before I reach my turn?

Evaluation occurs everywhere; all the time. It should not be a surprise.

It shouldn’t be a surprise to the person being evaluated, and it certainly shouldn’t be a surprise to the person doing the evaluation.
Unfortunately, it is a surprise all too often.

SMART as Hell Exercise:

  • List all of the evaluations you made this morning. Don’t stop until you’ve listed at least 20, because you’ve definitely made more than that.
  • Review your list
  • How many could you stop doing?
  • How easy or difficult would it be to stop evaluating?
  • What would happen if you stopped evaluating – positive and negative?
  • Should you do more evaluation or less?
  • Are your evaluations effective?
  • What would make them more effective?
  • What will you do differently tomorrow, based on this review?

 Post any interesting findings below…
