Would You Rather Be A Judge Or An Ass?

Posted by on February 6th, 2013 with 0 Comments

This is a trick question, according to an old Indian proverb.

Never stand in front of a judge or behind a donkey.
– Indian proverb (Facts on File Dictionary of Proverbs, Martin H. Manser)

When a behavior is being compared to the back end of a donkey, it’s probably a behavior you don’t want any part of. The best way to eliminate this behavior – judging – is to replace it with goals.

Let’s look at basketball for an example.
If you are a basketball player who wants people to stop judging his performance, you would simply score 20 points a game.  Ha-ha! If only it were that simple… but 20 points is a ‘magic number’ in basketball, because it’s indisputable. For as long as I’ve watched the sport, 20 points is considered a ‘good game’ and one who achieves that target is considered a ‘good player’.

In football, you want to throw for 4,000 yards or run for 1,000 yards in a season.

In baseball, you want to bat .300 for a season. Get 3,000 hits or 300 wins in your career and you’re virtually guaranteed to go into the Hall of Fame.

When an athlete achieves these numbers, the only debate left is, “Who’s going to make me a millionaire?”

What if you had that kind of clarity in your goals?
Evaluation would no longer be your biggest issue; deciding how to spend your money would be.

SMART as Hell Exercise:

  • What’s the ‘magic number’ for your job or industry?
  • Is it in units? How many you sold or made…
  • Is it in dollars? Revenue, costs, or profits?
  • Is it in percentages? Occupancy, accuracy, or cases closed?
  • Is it in time? Time saved, cycle time, or speed?
  • If no magic number exists, what should it be? What’s a number that would amaze your colleagues/competitors? For example, if you’re a librarian, how many book would need to be signed out of your library for you to make the librarian hall of fame?

In my learning group, delivering 100 classes while reaching 1000 employees with a 4.5/5.0 rating is considered an ‘all-star’ year.
