Do You Believe in Magic?

Posted by on March 5th, 2013 with 0 Comments

I don’t.

I don’t believe in pixie dust, divine intervention, voodoo, witchcraft, astrology, crystals, ‘the secret’, spoon-bending, or fortuitous bank transfers from South Africa.

I also don’t believe in aliens, fairies, mermaids, leprechauns, nessie, bigfoot, or that manufactured creature named Kim Kardasian.

What do I believe in?

I do believe in hard work. I also believe in teamwork, handiwork, groundwork, artwork, craftwork, housework, woodwork, homework, bodywork, network, roadwork, and rework.

Make your decision, resolve your heart, calm your spirit, refresh your mind, and then break through every barrier until you reach your goal.
Yamamoto Tsunetomo, from D.E. Tarver’s translation of “The Hagakure

Let’s be clear – it isn’t that I ‘like’ work.
Hell, my dad once said, “Glenn isn’t afraid of hard work. He can lay down right next to it and sleep all day”.

If it feels like work, I don’t like it. I try with all my might to turn work into play – often to the dismay of my teammates.
But, I believe in work, because it’s all that works.

Who needs a 300-page self-help guide when you’ve got Yamamoto Tsunetomo’s 6-step method?

  1. Make your decision.
Choose your path. Pick your partner. Select something. Indecision kills.
  2. Resolve your heart.
Put your entire heart behind your decision. A fractured heart cannot win.
  3. Calm your spirit.
Manage your breath, your energy, and your passion. Too much is literally too much.
  4. Refresh your mind.
Let your goal and decision be the only things in your mind. The naysayers don’t exist. The rules don’t exist.
  5. Break through every barrier.
Act. Move forward. Always forward. Except when you move backward. Then move forward again. Go over. Go under. Go around. When necessary, go through.
  6. Reach your goal.
Don’t relax. Don’t stop short. Complete your follow-through. Run through the finish line.

Interestingly, I’ve seen cases where a person reaches their goal, but – because they didn’t complete the other five steps – the accomplishment didn’t stick. They didn’t reach the goal through their own decision. Or their heart is elsewhere. Or their spirit is volatile. Or their mind is cluttered and corrupt. Or they didn’t clear all barriers.

The only magic is work. So make your plan and then work your own magic

SMART as Hell Exercise

  1. Reflect: On goals you’ve reached and goals you’ve failed to reach.
  2. Ask: For each successful goal, which of the six steps was key?
  3. Ask again: For each failed goal, which of the six steps were lacking?
  4. Review: Any patterns in your successes and failures.
  5. Identify: What you’ll do differently to be more successful.
  6. Act: On what you’ve identified.
