Spring Forward

Posted by on March 11th, 2013 with 0 Comments

On Sunday, I lost an hour of my life. The clock ‘sprung forward’ and I either got one less hour of sleep, or one less hour of productive life.

I hate that.

Never mind that, if I’m being honest, there’s a good chance that the hour wouldn’t have been productive.
I’m an optimist.

Never mind that I’m getting it back next fall.
I might not need it then.

There are two good thing about ‘springing forward’, however:

  1. It makes me more conscious of the arbitrary nature of time.
We move it around for different regions. We move it at different times of year. We set some clocks fast and some clocks slow. Football has a clock, while baseball des not.
  2. It reminds me that that time doesn’t care about us – at all.
    It just keeps moving on.

Each year at this time, I’m clearly see that, on one hand, we control our time. We decide how long we spend doing something. We decide when to get up, when to sleep, when to eat, when to work, when to play.

I also see that, on the other hand, we have no control of time.

You may delay, but time will not.
– Benjamin Franklin

Time keeps tick, tick, ticking along… It doesn’t care about clocks, calendars, or Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.
We could create a new month called ‘Glennuary’ – I’m pushing hard for that, by the way – and the universe wouldn’t care.

So, instead of cursing the loss of one hour, I use ‘Spring Forward’ as a reminder to literally ‘Spring Forward’.
I review my goals.
I make my plans.
And I take a couple of big actions towards my goals.

This year, I’m presenting at ISPI in Reno, Nevada on April 15th.
This action helps me move my mission, vision, and goals forward – because time won’t wait for me… or anyone.

SMART as Hell Exercise:

  1. Reflect: How do you feel about the relentless passing of time?
  2. Identify: How you leverage or ignore time as a tool in your life?
  3. List: What would or should I do differently about my relationship with time?
  4. Act: On your list
